two left feet ?
Believe you have two left feet ? You are not alone . . .
Almost everyone in our class thought they had two left feet before they attended class. Our teacher, a world-class professional competitive dancer, delights in working with beginners who feel overwhelmed. And she is very supportive of the LGBT community and loves teaching us to dance!
“I am too embarrassed . . .”
Embarrassment can come from: not knowing what you are doing, feeling others are critical of you, having a teacher who does not understand your problems learning to dance….
A supportive, safe environment
That is what our class is for. We provide a safe environment, where same-sex dancers come and enjoy themselves, and the teacher understands our needs and even our jokes! In fact, some people come because they love to mix with the group; we take "field trips": dinner, art museum, walks in the park, trips to East Coast, West Coast and Europe! We also hold social dances throughout the year.
“I feel silly on the dance floor . . .”
We understand. You look out on the dance floor and there they are, the “graceful ones,” the “rhythmical ones,” the “cool ones,” the “extrovert ones.” Well, we welcome the cool & graceful ones in class, but most people in our class started off as folks who had never been out there on the dance floor and had never learned to dance. That is, until they came to SLED!
Ballroom dancing has many advantages over “freestyle” dancing ---- there are actually steps you can learn! Some of our dancers say this makes it much easier than having to decide what to do when the music comes on! And you can learn the steps in a sequence and then start to feel confident. Our teacher will teach a short routine -- you learn it and practice it…. And believe us, you will soon look really good!

“I don't pick things up fast . . .”
People learn at different rates. Some learn quickly, others will take more time. No problem! You can take all the time you need to learn to dance - and it is important to realize that no one gets it the first time - no one ! Dancing takes practice and lots of it. And practice really does make perfect. Our experienced dancers are happy to help out because we know that you will get it in the end and we love seeing our dance community grow. The more dancers, the more fun we have!
